Essay Symbols and Symbolism in The Great Gatsby - 520 Words
Symbolism in The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby is filled with symbols and symbolism, which try to convey Fitzgeralds ideas to the reader. The symbols are uniquely involved in the plot of the story, which makes their implications more real. There are three major symbols that serve very important significance in the symbolism of the novel. They are the valley of the ashes, the reality that represents the corruption in the world, the green light of Daisys lap that Gatsby sees across the bay and lastly, the symbolism of the East Egg and West Egg or more important the east and the west of the country. The Valley of the Ashes is located next to the river, where railroad and highway intersect. It is a dumpster between West Eggâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The green light is what Gatsby aspires to meet his entire life, it is his primal destination in life. The only reason Gatsby buys the house is to see the light in Daisys window across the bay. In chapter 5 when Gatsby tells Daisy how he stares bluntly at the green light, he is aware that he will no longer need to stare it for he has Daisy back now. He wins the reward, which was behind his primal target. His reward is the real thing and he no longer needs its representative and thus the green light begins to fade. Gatsby begins to slowly recognize the reality: no object can replace his ideal that he has created for himself since the yearly age. This shows how no mater how much materialism is acquired by a person, it will never be enough and it will never quite match up to ones illusion, to ones dream. The symbolism behind East Egg and West Egg plays an important role in Fitzgeralds expression of corruption. East represents the wealth and the sophistication as well as the recklessness and the corruption of the people. The West on the other hand represents the lower classes, which in their blindness try to attain wealth, in order to fit in with the high privileged classes, which are mercenary to begin with. Fitzgerald points out here that both the upper, more privileged classes and the lower classes are immoral and corrupt for each of them has reached a level where their lives are taken by the materialism of life. The customer who visits Dominos regularly for say to get their daily meals or any other similar reason comes under the Beneficial Segment. They could benefit themselves by ordering cheapest but tastiest pizza or could get benefited by ordering healthiest pizza. It depends on just ones own perception. Dominos Marketing Mix for the New Product Dominos has recently launched a new pizza which has a chicken base and kept some faulty name for it as Specialty Chicken. Its marketing mix is as follows. Product Mix To make chicken base for the new pizza the chef swaps the crust made up of dough into slices of bread, 12 in number. This is made up of 100 % white whole breast chicken and toppings are same as of pizza like vegetable, sauces, meats and cheese. This recipe has been launched in four flavours Spicy Jalapeno Pineapple, Crispy Bacon and Tomato, Sweet BBQ Bacon and Classic Hot Buffalo (Li and Wearing 2014). Price Mix As price is concerned this is a perfect deal for the target market identified above. As the Dominos has a policy to keep its prices consistent and uniform the price for specialty chicken has not been kept much and is under the budget of normal people. The price for the pizza is 3.99$ for the medium size without any extra toppings. Though the customer can always customize it on the appropriate costs (Horvitz 2010). Place Mix Specialty Chicken has been made available in every outlet throughout the 60 countries in which the Dominos operates. The customers could even file complain if not satisfied. Also, they can ask for the money back. Promotions Mix To promote its new product Dominos is using internet at its best. It has even distributed its pamphlets and this new product is on the front page of the menu in every store. It has used social media too at its best by offering 25000 free pizzas who advertises it well. Customer Value The new product at Dominos i.e. Specialty Chicken has been completely designed out of customers requirements and desires. Also its price has been kept very reasonable so that anyone could afford it easily. In all parts of the world chicken is everyones favourite and in demand except for some nations like India where people prefer veg. So it has targeted the massive population (Horvitz 2010). Justification of New Product This new product launch has met all the policies and rules of Dominos along with its impact on the organization and the market both has proved to be good results till now. It has overcome one of the weaknesses of Dominos as the health conscious customers can consume this for this has been created with less oil scheme. Though fat is there because of chicken still less use of oil has made it a perfect food for conscious ones (Li and Wearing 2014). Still the company has many opportunities open as it could launch more products that has low calories and could even expand its business in developing countries. Dominos has a well chance to survive in the race. References Steve, R. (2011) Quiznos chain faces tough finance issues, The Denver Post, https://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_18721934. Karen, R. She disputes that the viewers emotional investment in the show stirs trouble in their own personal relationships. Cloud believes the overload of viewers attachment in the show is obvious by social media comments. On twitter one user tweeted twice in one day about the program and her opinions; these users help verify the attachment of many viewers (Roth). While Cloud argues their investment is negative, psychology suggests the viewers are benefiting from it. Tiffany Brewer argues, The general premise of the social cognitive theory is that people learn from observing others actions and attitudes and the consequences they face as a result. This process is known as modeling and is a core premise of entertainment education (12). The theory implies that viewers are going to apply the positive behavior to their own personal romantic relationships and learn what not to do from the negative behavior by investing themselves in the reality programs. The Bachelor not only benefits the viewers but also many of the participants. Many of the couples that became engaged at the end of the season have moved on past the show and created families. Ryan Suttee the winner of Triads heart from season one of The Bachelors tweeted, Beautiful day to spend with my beautiful wife and kids. So grateful! Him and Tristan have been married for over ten years now and have children. Another example off beneficial relationship is Jason and Molly another chance. Jason, who had a kid from a previous marriage, is now married to Molly and they have a newborn baby. Molly posted a tweet after her baby was born eying, Thank you everyone for all of the well wishes! Riley is such a dream and couldnt be more perfect! We are so happy and in love!!!! #Erlenmeyers. Both of these tweets suggest that the show has benefited couples from The Bachelor. Dating shows are not the only types of reality television shows that affect relationships. In addition to romantic relationships reality television involving competitions, such as The Amazing Race, improve existing relationships between friends and family. The Amazing Race is a reality game show, which typically eleven teams of two race around the world. These partners range from husband and wife to mother and her son racing roughly twelve legs interspersed with physical and mental challenges. Critics have argued reality games shows bring out the worse sides of the contestants, but actually most contestants seem to have really positive experiences. Terry Gross, the host of Philadelphia public radio, offered contestants his opinion that shows like The Amazing Race are designed to bring out the worst in people because you have to be brutally competitive, incredibly aggressive, and honest in the cruelest sense. While Gross is arguing these game shows are punishing relationships, CBS offers elimination interviews of the contestants that imply the opposite. One team, Jessica and John, stated, [a]after running around the world and having your view expanded it makes it more clear than ever how fortunate all of us are. For Jessica and John The Amazing Race offered the insight to appreciate one another in order to strengthen their relationship. Many other couples agree that the show has been beneficial. Another couple Pam and Winnie commented, we would do it again in a heartbeat. We loved the Race so much. We would do it again even if there was no prize money. Their quote also provides evidence on how The Amazing Race gave them an opportunity of a lifetime that they were able to experience together only helped make them closer. There are many sources that support the the participants arguing the benefits of The Amazing Race. In 2006, National Geographic Magazine published an article declaring, [I]f anyone can tell you how to travel outside your comfort zone, embrace risk, and come back alive, its the Winners of TVs The Amazing Race (Whiners). The contestants are facing these risky challenges gather and are experiencing these challenges together, making them stronger. While The Amazing Race takes people to exotic locations, 16 Pregnant is reality television revealing people in their day-to-day life. Mats hit show affects both the viewers and reality stars. 16 Pregnant focuses much more on the relationships between parent and child not only with the newborn, but also with the tens parent as well. The show follows the lives of pregnant teenagers and films the struggles with teen pregnancy. 6 Pregnant has shown positive correlations with one of the main issues in The United States, teen pregnancy. MET paired with The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy to help reduce the rates of teen pregnancy. The campaign published an article revealing facts about teen pregnancy and noted that in 2006 when the rates spiked about 164 out of 1,000 teens became pregnant. The article confirms that MET is working with t he campaign to help viewers understand the fundamental problems of teen pregnancy. In 2009, the first read that [a]approximately 39 births and 72 pregnancies occur per 1,000 girls age 15-19 (Fast Facts). This evidence suggests that 16 Pregnant has led to a decrease in teen pregnancy. After viewing the negative effects of teen pregnancy on the show, teenagers are making better decisions when it comes to their sexual involvement. A research was done to help understand the effects of the program. The paper read: Teenagers are being positively reinforced by watching 16 and Pregnant. Through the use of ads during the show and through the struggles each teen mom encounters, MET is teaching the audience a very valuable lesson: that waiting to have sex and practicing safe sex are the best ways to avoid becoming pregnant as a teenager. Understanding 3) This article lays out partnership formed with MET and advertising nannies as an effort to reduce teen pregnancy. The shows sole purpose, according to MET, is to educate teens and encourage smart decisions within their relationships. 16 and Pregnant captures the building of relationships between not only the teenager and her child but also the teenager and her parent. By observing the behaviors presented on television, viewers are learning how to make smart decisions to help create healthy relationships. Even though many of the examples of behavior shown on television are negative, viewers can still learn by observing according to the theory presented by Tiffany Brewer. Her study on teenagers provides additional evidence that indicates the positive effect of the reality program. She surveyed a group of teenage viewers to bring to the light the lesson they are learning through watching 16 Pregnant each week, after she was done surveying, the most common response was people thought more about the consequences of their actions. The balancing of financial costs, schoolwork, social activities, and a child can be a hassle. The episodes display the legitimate challenges and how a teenager should approach handling the situation. The relationships grow and develop with onscreen inversion and while viewers watch the interactions they will grasp tips and ideas on how to reach out to communicate with their own family members. This exposure will open up conversation about sexual behaviors between parents and their children. It will provide a comforting stance for families to be more open with one another. By making a reality television show center on the issue of teen pregnancy, they are raising awareness in young people and influencing them to make intelligent decisions within their relationship. (Session) 16 Pregnant is not the only show that MET has produced to raise awareness for an issue. The series Catfish is another example off reality television show that affects the audience by opening their eyes to a controversy. Catfish is a television series on MET that is based off of the original documentary about a young man named Yanks Coalman who had a strange experience with online dating. He discovered that the person he had been talking to was actually an older woman faking her identity as a youthful, beautiful girl. Yanks created the series to help others in society who are dealing with similar situations. While some believe Catfish is only boosting the amount of fake online identities, the program similar to 16 Pregnant, addresses the issue and makes viewers aware of the stranger dangers lurking online. Providing knowledge of the mishaps can be used as a guide and relationships (Calendar). While many of societys immediate thoughts are that reality television shows have a negative effect on relationships, there is more evidence to support their broadcasting. Reality television has increasing become more popular within the past 10 years and it is important that society knows the effects of watching it. Reality television is benefiting real life relationships of stars and those who tune in to watch t every evening by providing with great experiences and both positive and negative examples of relationships.

Utopian Society Essay
Utopian Society Essay Utopian Society Essay Utopian Society Every economy throughout the world has a combination of a command or market economy. However as shown in our history to create a utopia you cannot use purely a market or a command society. In order to make a Utopian Society, a community and its government must have a perfect combination of command and market economies. In the perfect society, there are certain economic factors such as freedom, growth, stability, equality, and efficiency that are needed to create a utopia. In a utopian society the freedom and growth would come from the market system because it to shows that it is more of a constant and has proven to work far better for all market economies than command economies. Hong Kong the most free city in the world has only a 3.4% unemployment rate and their GDP per capita is $52,300. Also, in Uzbekistan one of the least free countries in the world had an estimated 5% unemployment rate in 2011, thatââ¬â¢s 1.4% higher than Hong Kong's unemployment rate. Uzbekistanââ¬â¢s GDP per capita is also $3,600, thatââ¬â¢s $48,700 less than Hong Kongââ¬â¢s $52,300. Thus people who work for their own benefit rather than their countries have a higher incentive to work harder and have a higher economic growth rate, therefore a utopian society should take both freedom and growth from a market economy. In a utopian society the equality, stability, and efficiency would come from the command economy because the government is in control and decides how the businesses are going to work and who will work. In these types of economies the government decides what is fair, therefore there is no time consuming debates like there usually are in a market economy when dealing with business owners and consumers about prices of product or pay. India has a budget of $169.4 billion, $328.7 billion less than Australiaââ¬â¢s $498.1 billion which causes the government to push idea of equity better and more efficiently. Also, Indiaââ¬â¢s GDP real growth rate is 6.5% which is 2.9% higher than Australia's 3.6%, confirming that command economies are more efficient and effective than market economies. In the past the country of Germany under the command of Adolf Hitler had once reached a 0% unemployment rate. Command economies are also very efficient because they chose to handle their resources to th e best of their abilities. Central planners decide where and what the resources are used, creating the least amount of wasted resources possible. For example, in World War 2 Russiaââ¬â¢s command economy was able to build their army and weapons quickly with

He further shows cruelty of human race as his the only species that tries to eliminate his own kind by slaughtering strangers of his own kind as it was witnessed in the Zulu war by prince Napoleon and in day today in Afghanistan and Iraq a trait that no other species possess. Through this arguments and use of ethos and pathos, it is evident that Man is crueler as opposed to other species, which makes him less as compared to other species (Twain and Nicholls) The trait of greedy is also evident in the human race as opposed to other races. This is observed when he uses an example of gathering habits of man as compared to those of animals. Human race accumulated more millions of money and still have a great desire for more even more that they will never use in their lifetime but is just to appease their desire. Animals have the same chance to accumulate as much food as they can, but they gather only what they need for their survival, this was witnessed in animals like Squirrels, bees, birds and ants. Through his well-argued example, the human race is greedy but other species are not, and this also makes his essay a successful one (Twain and Watson). The human race is also the species that show slavery. Slavery has been witnessed in the scramble for land by use of force and bloodshed. This slavery never ended but is still practiced in one way or other. Man has always been

ââ¬ÅEndgameââ¬Â by Samuel Beckett Essay Example for Free
ââ¬Å"Endgameâ⬠by Samuel Beckett Essay ââ¬Å"Finished, itââ¬â¢s finished, nearly finished, it must be nearly finished Grain upon grain, one by one, and one day, suddenly, theres a heap, a little heap, the impossible heapâ⬠. (p. 3) Here the endgame starts. In chess the endgame is defined as the stage of the game when only few pieces are left on the board. The same is with the Beckettââ¬â¢s play as there are only four people left. The endgame is a series of moves when the game is near the ending and its outcome is decided before the ceremony of the endgame occurs. Samuel Beckett is known to be a chess player and in the play the author compares the endgame with the end of life ââ¬â death as death is inevitable as the game always ends. We see that in the play the main characters are enacting repetitive rituals labeled as the part of their endgame. Despite inevitable outcome the main characters are dragging through the final moves making their routines and they are doing whatever it takes to get through the day and to see the next day. The characters try to get through despite their game is lost. The idea of chess game is put in accordance with movements on the stage. The most vulnerable piece on the board is Hamm who utters: ââ¬Å"Me to playâ⬠. (p. 18) Hamm is perceived as the King and he seems to be the most powerful. Clov is protective character in the centre of the board and Hamm often relies on him. Therefore, Clov is presented as the Queen and he is able to move easily. However, his erratic way of movement seems to be more suitable to the movement of the Knight. Nell and Nagg are insignificant characters and they are viewed as the Pawns ââ¬â they appear only when the King calls for them. One by one the main characters are dying and one by one the chess figures are leaving the board. Nothing is eternal in the world and every game has its ending. The theme of chess play shows cyclical Universe ââ¬â ââ¬Ëthe play ends with a stalemateââ¬â¢. The game will be played over and over again. Works Cited Adorno, Theodor W.
